RCN Competencies

Launch of the RCN Emergency Nurse Competencies in our department

These national competencies were launched in 2017 and we are now adopting them in our ED rather than having lots of different competencies (like triage and resus competencies). The only other competencies we will use are the national major trauma competencies which you will cover on the TILS day.

Level 1 competencies are for band 5 Emergency nurses and level 2 competencies are for band 6 nurses in the ED.

The Good nursing competencies are aligned to the NMC code and are intended to promote professional behaviour, teamwork, leadership and practice development. There are eight cross cutting themes that underpin emergency nursing:

  1. Patient assessment
  2. Pain assessment and management
  3. Medicines management
  4. Moving & Handling
  5. Infection prevention and control
  6. Safeguarding children and adults
  7. Documentation and record keeping
  8. Preventing and controlling V&A

Seven clinical domains outline the specific knowledge and skills that ED nurses require

  1. Caring for acutely ill adults
  2. Caring for adults undergoing resuscitation
  3. Caring for adults with minor inury and illness (Triage and fast flow)
  4. Caring for children and young people (16 and 17 years old in our ED and the competencies for younger children can be achieved on the rotation to BCH ED)
  5. Caring for people with mental health needs
  6. Caring for older people
  7. Emergency planning and disaster management (CBRN)

The competencies begin by asking you to self assess your competence level by using Benners stages of clinical competence (see introduction to the competency documents)

Your competencies can be signed off after assessment by a variety of people in the ED

  • Your team leader
  • Lead band 7s
  • Clinical practice facilitators
  • Clinical educators
  • ENPs
  • ACPs
  • Matrons
  • Consultant Nurse

Appropriate evidence may include:

  • Direct observation of practice
  • Case based discussions
  • Simulation
  • Reflection
  • Q&A
  • Anonymised clinical case notes
  • Taking part in the WhatsApp teaching conversations
  • Bite sized teaching
  • Feedback from colleagues
  • Nationally recognised courses (ED course at UWE, TILS, ILS, )

New ED nurses will receive a printed copy of the competencies as part of their induction programme, many of you will receive them as part of departmental SDs, otherwise please ask Rachel, Julie or Leo for a copy, (further copies will have to be paid for)

This is an exciting opportunity to plan and evidence your learning and competence as an ED nurse. We are the first ED in the region to adopt these national competencies!

currently you’d find the posts on Wellen’s syndrome, LBBB, The Cardiac Conduction Cycle etc. In each of these posts, at the bottom is a table with all the RCN competencies relevant to the post and teaching thread for you to use as evidence.

As the teaching group develops and the amount of topics covered increases, more of the competencies will be covered, which will assist you all in signing them off.

Remember, this is essentially your nursing passport. You can take your portfolio to any employer in the future as proof of what you can do, from Triage to Plastercasts to Suturing etc. For those Band 5’s aiming for Band 6, having your book as close to completion as possible can only benefit you! Similarly, for Band 6’s striving towards Band 7 in the future, your completed Level 2 portfolio will show where your knowledge and skills are in relation to your peers. Use this great tool to your advantage!
